Fur Yarn News

Message from Paula

Hello and welcome to the second edition of the Fur Yarn by Paula Lishman Newsletter. It is finally spring in Ontario, and we are all delighted to see flowers emerging daily from their winter "digs" into the sunshine!

We are very excited this Spring about launching our fur yarns into the retail market. I know that I am the luckiest person in the world, because I get to wear this most comforting fabric every day. I wish I could see the reaction of everyone who feels this fur yarn for the first time, in their favorite yarn store.

I have done many shows with our retail partners over the past 27 years, and I love the look on a customer’s face when she first experiences the impact of touching our knit fur garments, a material so imbedded in our consciousness, that she gets goose-bumps on the back of her arm. This 100% natural fiber has an authenticity that impacts strongly, especially to those fingers trained to appreciate fine textures. I know that for all of us who love to create with fibers, you will, as I do still, truly love to work with this real fur yarn.

I recently made some sheared beaver wheelchair arm covers for a girlfriend’s father, and the comfort he receives from this luxurious touch in his day, is very gratifying. I believe that fur has curative, as well as comfort properties.

I am so very lucky that I can wrap myself in the luxury of knit and crocheted fur, every day! I encourage you to experience this amazing yarn yourself, and treat yourself to one of our very practical, yet totally luxurious, kits. Spring and summer are a great time to work with fur, because you can work outside, and avoid any mess from the excess hairs.

I am very happy to share this amazing product with a wider market, and know that you will share your finished products with your friends and family!

Happy Summer!

Fur Yarn: The Launch

We have been working away at getting fur yarn into stores over the last few months. The details have finally all come together and we are approaching finer yarn shops across the US and Canada over the coming months. If you know of a store that would be a natural fit for fur yarn, please email questions@furyarn.com with their contact information, or just march on in and tell them to visit furyarn.com and click on "become a retailer"

Techniques by Janet

Janet Sheehey has worked closely with Paula Lishman for the last 10 years. She is an expert in the many uses of fur yarn and has created many of the patterns used in our kits. As an important part of the fur yarn team, Janet will contribute to the newsletter on a regular basis. If you have any questions for her please email janet@furyarn.com

One of the most asked question I get is "Do I have to knit the fur with another yarn?"

The answer to this is no, our fur yarn can be knit on its own without another yarn. However, to knit it with an extra yarn will save you money in the long run.

This month I am going to talk about a simple technique we use to save on the fur yarn cost but still give an over all look of fur to any garment.

I call it the "one and one technique".

This is when you knit with one stitch of fur and one stitch of another yarn. We usually use a cotton slub as the secondary yarn, we have found this works the best. When working the fur this way you will not be able to see the cotton yarn so it doesn’t have to be an expensive yarn. This technique produces  a lighter weight fabric than knitting all fur. This technique is used on our mitt pattern.

A variation to this technique is to put a couple of rows in between the fur row.

It is amazing how little you will see the secondary yarn. The fur is cut to a 15 mm length so even with the two rows in between the garment will look like all fur at half the cost. See our light weight hat which uses this technique.

"Where can I find your product?" Ensile from Ontario, Canada asks

Our product is only found on-line at this time. Our retail launch is beginning spring 2006, if you know of a store that should carry fur yarn, ask them to visit our website, or send us their contact information, Questions@furyarn.com .

"Do you have a catalogue?" Roberta from Pennsylvania asks

Please visit www.furyarn.com and follow the link for a downloadable catalog. A printed versions can be ordered by phone 1 877 FUR YARN.

"Is the fur yarn really washable?" Erma from New Brunswick, Canada asks

Yes, our yarn is completely washable. We have had the pelts tanned a special way which allows this product to be washed and also does not need cold storage. Our washing instructions are posted on line as well as on each of our free patterns which are included in our kits.

"What size of skeins is the fur yarn sold?" Tammy from New York, asks

We sell our yarn by the yardage so you can order as much or as little as you like. We will also be offering our yarn in 15, 30 and 50 gram balls.
